Blog Post #3
This week I'm reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I'm only about halfway through and I am loving it. I have become so invested in it. It's about a young African American girl named Starr and her struggle with a traumatic experience. Sorry for the upcoming spoilers. One night Starr is coming home from a party with a friend, Khalil, and they get pulled over. When Khalil got asked to get out of the car by the officer, he leaned in to see if Starr was doing okay and the officer turned and shot, killing him. Now she's trying to go through life after watching her friend die. Which I could not imagine doing. Eventually she goes to the police to give her statements, since she was the witness, but the police were no hope for getting justice for Khalil. Starr also doesn't go to school in her neighborhood. She goes to a mostly white private school. Here, Starr tries to turn her "ghetto-ness" off to fit in with her friends at school. And when the friends from school find out about the shooting, she denies knowing who Khalil was, which kills her on the inside. So, its interesting to see her fight in these two different worlds and trying not to let them interact with each other. Like I said, so far I love this book and can't wait to finish it!
I have so wanted to read this book since I saw the movie trailer for it. It sounds so emotional but eye opening. The fact that she feels like she has to change who she is to fit in, is relateable to a lot of people. Then how she has to deal with the death of a friend, being there when that friend died, and trying to hide their friendship from everyone. INTENSE. I am glad to hear that it is something you have become invested in. It makes me that much more excited to begin reading it myself.

I also watched the movie when it came out as well and it was just as good as the book. It is so eye opening and gets you thinking! I am glad you are loving this book Keaton!
